The Lowest Position and the Extra Mile

Take the lowest position

Explanation: Don’t fight for the first position, but be content with the lowest. This training exercise helps us with patience, it helps us become more fully present where we are, and it helps us look for ways to serve and bless other people.

Examples: at tables, grocery lines, traffic lanes, parking lots; and in conversation do not exalt yourself.

Scriptures: “Woe to you, Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues . . . and in the marketplaces.” – Lk. 11:43

“When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor . . . but when you are invited, take the lowest place …” – Lk. 14:8-10

“Those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” – Lk. 14:11

Go the extra mile

Explanation: Continue serving beyond your duty. This training exercise helps us learn to serve as a lifestyle. It also helps us look for ways to bless other people with our gifts of time and energy that are given for them.

Examples: holding open doors, serving food or drinks, cleaning the house, etc.Scripture: “If anyone asks you to go one mile, go with them two miles.” – Matt. 5:41
